Larissa

The nymph of the Pineios

What’s the story behind the name of the city on the banks of the Pineios River which has always been the epicentre of Thessaly? Legend says that name is derived from the nymph Larissa who drowned in the river while playing with her ball.
The town of Larissa is situated in the center of the Thessalian plain and has been the capital of Thessaly throughout its long history, from ancient Pelasguiotida to this day. It constitutes the economic, administrative and scientific centre of Thessaly.

With culture as your partner, let your imagination loose on the dancefloor of Larissa.

Larissa welcomes you with pedestrian streets, cafes and bars, restaurants and ouzeri. The Ancient theatre, the Hippocrates’ monument, the Bezesteni 15th century ottoman covered market , the Municipal Art Gallery, the Folklore Museum and the Diachronic Museum; they all make up a retrospective of a city justly proud of its times gone by.
